Forest land sales in Estonia

15.06.2024

Forest land in Estonia covers about 51.5% of the country’s territory, totalling approximately 2.33 million hectares which makes it one of the most forested countries in Europe. Over the years, Estonia’s forest area has seen a significant increase, from 42.4% in 1988 to its current extent. This expansion is attributed to a variety of factors including the reforestation of agricultural land and natural forest growth.

From 2000 to 2024, the forest land market in Estonia has seen various trends and developments. For instance, the increasing demand for timber and forest products, both domestically and internationally, has influenced forest management practices and land sales. Therefore, Estonia exports a significant amount of its harvested timber, especially to neighbouring countries like Finland and Sweden.

Hence, the period from 2000 to 2024 has seen Estonia maintaining a robust forestry sector with a strong emphasis on both commercial exploitation and conservation of its forest resources.
